In front of a commanding officer, an angry farmer makes fun of cricket, causing the officer to challenge the farmers to a game of cricket. Farmers are suing and claiming that if they win, agriculture tax will be abolished for the next three years. However, if they lose, they will have to pay three times the amount of agricultural tax.
Is Lagaan movie based on Real Story?
Lagaan movie is based on real life story. Mohun Bagan Football Club, one of the oldest football teams in Asia, was participating. The account of how Mohun Bagan’s Lagaan moments were on July 29, 1911 is interesting. At the turn of the century, the situation in Bengal was volatile. Bengal had been partitioned by Lord Curzon in 1905, and there was tension everywhere. The independence movement had resurrected, putting the British on the defensive. It was against this background that a match took place between Mohun Bagan and the East Yorkshire Regiment of the British Army and the result changed the entire landscape of India.
Shivdas Bhaduri led Mohun Bagan, which was founded in 1889, although the players were barefoot. The East Yorkshire Regiment scored first in front of 80,000 spectators, but the Mohun Bagan captain leveled and the turning point of the game was when Abhilash Ghosh took advantage of Bhaduri’s feed to win the game. The stadium erupted with applause and there was a festive atmosphere on the ground. When it started to rain, understanding struck me. Mohun Bagan have won the IFA Shield trophy for the first time, becoming the first Indian side to do so.
This victory changed the country in many ways. Mohun Bagan Day was celebrated on 29th July, which gave a new breath of life and enthusiasm to the liberation struggle. The excitement generated by this victory spread across the country, prompting the British media to express their sentiments in one line: “What the Congress failed to do, Mohun Bagan did.” It has been 104 years since that great day, but Mohun Bagan’s achievements have stood the test of time.
